Dinos mourn loss of Jenny Vincent

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos are deeply saddened to announce the passing of women’s rugby head coach Jenny Vincent after a brief battle with cancer.

Vincent, who was diagnosed in December 2009, passed away Sunday morning. She was 41.

Jenny was the driving force behind obtaining varsity status for the Dinos women’s rugby program, culminating in their first season in Canada West last fall. She joined the program when it was a competitive club in the late 1990s and worked tirelessly to meet the necessary standards to elevate the program to the varsity level.

She was a pioneer in women’s rugby in Canada and was involved in many firsts in the sport. A player in the first senior women’s national championship tournament, Vincent was selected to the 1987 senior national team – the first national team Rugby Canada put on the pitch. As a coach, she led the University of Victoria Vikes in the inaugural season of Canadian Interuniversity Sport rugby play.

In 2000, she coached the Alberta U19 team to a gold medal at the first national junior championships, then added a silver at the U17 national championships a few years later – again, the first tournament of its kind. Most recently she helped coach the provincial U23 team to a gold medal performance at the inaugural national tournament for that age group.

Vincent obtained her BSc from Bishop’s University in 1991 and her MSc from the University of Victoria in 1994. She was pursuing a Ph.D. in sport technology at the University of Calgary and was a key member of the team that designed and implemented a major project for Own the Podium 2010 – a database which brought together results of Canadian winter athletes from past Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, World Cup events, World Championships, and other international competitions.

A native of Montreal, Vincent is survived by husband Jim Nield and her two children, Tyler (age 10) and Isaac (8).

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 27 at 2:30 p.m. at Parkdale United Church (2919 - 8 Ave. NW). Flags across the University of Calgary campus will be lowered to half-staff Wednesday in her memory.

To honour her memory, Jenny’s family has established the Jenny Vincent Coaching Endowment for Women’s Rugby, which will support future coaches of the Dinos women’s rugby program. Donations can be made by contacting Kristine Williamson at (403) 220-3651 or kristine.williamson@ucalgary.ca.

Alberta Summer Games 2010 -
Coaches and Chaperones

Peace River, Alberta will play host to the 2010 Alberta Summer games from the 19th - 25th July. At this time Rugby Alberta is seeking applications for a head coach and assistant coach for all 8 zones for both male and female teams. Each team must have at least on coach of the same gender to meet the Alberta Summer Games policy. In the event only one coach is available and is of the opposite gender a chaperone of the same gender assist and travel with the team to meet ASG policy. All coaches and chaperones must by 18 years of age.

Each zone will have a playoff competition or selection camp to identify 12 male players and 12 female players between the ages of 15-17 that will accompany the appointed coaches to the games. Rugby will take place in the first stage of the event from the 19th-22nd July.

The Zones:

For the Alberta Games, the province is divided into eight zones. Participants compete at zone playoffs prior to the Alberta Games, where they earn the right to compete as a member of the zone team.

As rugby has now been accepted in the Olympics in the 7-aside format an even greater emphasis will now be put into developing coaches for this variation of the game to groom both players and coaches for the 2016 and future Olympics. The Alberta Summer Games is played in the 7-aside format so is a great entry point for athletes and coaches to learn 7's rugby.

As a result Rugby Alberta in conjunction with the Alberta Junior Rugby Association will be holding 7s development workshops and camps to help the coaches selected to the Alberta Summer games to learn the unique aspects of the 7-aside game.

The successful appointed candidates must have a passion for rugby and must be certified to a minimum level of NCCP competition to Introduction / NCCP Level 1 or equivalent. Please note that this must be to a certified level and coaches in training cannot be accepted unless they complete certification prior to the games.

CRP Expansion Update

The current expansion of the number of playing fields at the Calgary Rugby Union's current facility is temporarily being put on hold. Due to the recent global economic downturn, the CRU finds itself short of the required funds and it has also been denied access to critical funding support from the Provincial Government (through the MCFP grant program), to complete the work required to adequately finish the two fields previously approved for expansion. Due to this roadblock, the CRU will find itself in a "state of construction renovation" for the remainder of 2009 and, quite possibly, a good part of 2010 until the required funds are arranged to complete the planned work.

To this end, everyone using the CRU fields and facilities for the 2009 season will have to be very careful and diligent in their use of the CRU facilities, parking areas and the overall grounds themselves. The CRU will try to do everything possible to ensure the facilities and the grounds meet all of the required safety standards, but would ask each and everyone visiting or using the CRU facilities, at any time, to exercise an added degree of caution and safety to ensure everyone's individual protection while at these premises. These cautionary words apply directly to everyone involved with the sport of rugby, those other sporting groups using the CRU fields and facilities and everyone else visiting the CRU park, for sporting or other social interests. Due to this construction delay, certain events may be suspended from using the CRU during this time period or may have to be re-scheduled to other outdoor venues within or around the City of Calgary. For this we apologize.

As the CRU does not control the ultimate timing and completion of the expansion plans initiated, the CRU does have the best interests of each and every one of its members, other user groups and/or social participants in mind for every aspect of its development. We shall endeavor to keep everyone informed as to any and all developments impacting the CRU and its facilities over the next period of time. All changes to the CRU and its forthcoming plans shall be posted on this website and will be available as soon as the information becomes available to the CRU or its management group. We apologize, in advance, for this great inconvenience, and shall work diligently to minimize the impact of this situation as expeditiously as possible.

Respectfully,

Calgary Rugby Union
